I enjoy the total war series and have played all but the oldest ones. I like crusader kings, it's politics system is fun, but I prefer pretending to be a general than a politician. I'm okay with any sort of mode, RTS or TBS, though I'm not a huge fan of base building. Any era is fine, but my favorites are world war 2 and the Renaissance era, and the civil war.
I'd prefer not to play a fantasy game, but if you know one thats just AWESOME let me know. The company that published Crusader Kings I, II, and the (buggier, but similar) Sengoku, is Paradox Interactive. They've created a bunch of other games that might be right up your alley. There's Hearts of Iron 3, which focuses on WW1 and WW2. It's definitely the most military focused game they've published.
There's also Europa Universalis 4 that focuses on the time period immediately following CK2, with colonization, building up your nation, and diplomacy. Victoria 2 plays fairly similarly to EU4 that's a bit more about industry and style of governing. There's a few other games they publish that might fit, but those are my best suggestions. Edit: Thanks, Hearts of Iron 3 is WW2 only.
Haven't actually played it because the site I ended up getting it from made installation a hassle, and haven't gotten around to buying it on Steam or something like that. Consider the 'Wargame' series.
It's got a focus on modern war (well, 1990s) and doesn't exactly play like other RTSs. There's no base building, you have set points to buy units with, a limited number of units you can buy (you build your own selection called a 'deck') and a focus on tactics. Unit spamming doesn't work, every unit has a counter, so you need to learn to use recon, anti-air, infantry, armour, air support, artillery and logistics together to support each other. I am terrible at strategy games and I am terrible at Wargame, but I've been having a lot of fun with it.
26 Games Like Command and Conquer Our collection of games like Command and Conquer (C&C) offers plenty of war based real time strategy games for C&C and Red Alert fans. The original Command and Conquer was one of the early instalments in the real time strategy genre and for many people was their first taste of strategy gameplay. The series has evolved greatly since its early days (first launching in 1995) and has maintained its popularity through many game releases. Despite the large number of games now in the C&C series there are some elements that continue to make an appearance and have become core elements of the franchise. Most notably is the reliance on parallel storylines that follow the actions of several different factions and their impact on the single storyline.

The games that form the Command and Conquer collection also do not touch on the fantasy genre, choosing to keep the game a more realistic war experience. C&C achieves this by pulling units from the past, present and near future of our own world rather than a fantasy one. The Command and Conquer series is also well-known for its use of a side bar UI rather than the traditional horizontal bar used by most other games in the genre. The games like Command and Conquer here all fall into the real time strategy genre with a focus on multiple factions or realistic warfare.
